X% of Californians going through divorces do not use lawyers. One reason for this is that lawyers are expensive and may add to the pain of a divorce. It makes sense that someone who does not own property or have children would think that a lawyer is unnecessary. You may fear that an attorney will create problems where none exist and turn your divorce into "Kramer vs. Kramer: the Next Generation"

Your life is already falling apart, why invite lawyers to the party, and pay them for the privilege? This attitude is precisely why one would be wise to work with an attorney during the divorce: your attorney's job is to look out for you and only you, even if it seems that if would be easier to just file the divorce and be done with it.

Women in particular may feel that it is not worth the hassle of litigation to receive spousal or child support, and are liable to give up rights that they may not even know they have. There may also be issues that you were not aware of; how many times has a spouse discovered information about their better half that they had NO IDEA about or never would have thought to ask about.

Family lawyers know how to obtain information that you may not have known, or not known for sure. The dissolution process is like building a house. You are building your new future, and you probably had not expected to have to re-design in this way. A house that is built quickly and without the appropriate support and structure may look passable and last a couple of years, but down the road you are sure to discover leaks and cracks that will hit you in the pocketbook that could have been avoided. Finances in particular are a tricky road to navigate during a dissolution. Once a judgment is entered regarding marital debts and property, it can be nearly impossible to change it down the road when you realize you will still be paying your student loan debt while your child is filling out his first FAFSA.

You would not change your own brakes, would you? Take control of your financial life, your foundation for your future and your children's future. Now is not the time to be nice and sacrifice your financial stability for an expedient divorce.
